About this project

The brief, in detail

This customer got in touch with a severe leak that was damaging their property, just as the wet weather was setting in for winter. A patch repair would only have bought them time, so we recommended a full roof replacement and booked it for the one dry day in the forecast.

We filmed the whole job, so you can see exactly how our team works from start to finish. Scaffold by Fretwell Scaffolding was up on time, skips were on site by half nine, and a big Prestige Roof team had the old roof stripped, re-felted, re-battened and re-tiled by early afternoon.

The existing tiles were in perfect condition once they were cleaned, so there was no reason to put the customer to the cost of new ones. Every tile was cleaned of moss and re-laid. Underneath, everything is new: breathable membrane, treated battens, 12 inch eaves support trays, and a dry ridge and dry verge system. The solar panels were taken off, checked over and refitted the same day.

As with every roof replacement we carry out, the work was checked and signed off by building control the following day, and the customer went through our completion checklist with us so they knew everything in the quote had been done.

If your roof is over 25 years old, or you have spotted a leak or slipped tiles, give us a call on 01485 789 017 for a free roof check. We cover Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and across the East of England from our base in Dersingham.

A severe leak and one dry day

The customer called us with a severe leak that was damaging the inside of their home, and with winter coming, the forecast was rain, rain and more rain. We found a dry day and committed to replacing the whole roof in it. The scaffold went up the afternoon before and first thing that morning, the skips arrived, and our pink vans rolled up loaded with every material the job needed: breathable membrane, treated battens, eaves trays and a full dry ridge and verge system.

Solar panels off, tiles saved

The solar panels came off first so they could be checked over and refitted later that afternoon. Then the tiles came off by hand. The original tiles were in good condition under years of moss, so rather than charge the customer for new ones we cleaned every tile as it came off and stacked it ready to go back on. Birds had been getting under the panels and picking at the old felt, which is exactly how small gaps turn into the kind of leak this customer had.

Stripped back and checked to building regulations

With the roof stripped to the rafters we checked the loft insulation. Building regulations call for 270mm, so we measure it on every re-roof and top it up if it falls short. This one was already above the mark. All of our roof replacements are signed off by building control, so the customer gets an independent, third-party check on the work as well as our own guarantee.

Eaves trays, membrane and new battens

New eaves support trays went in along the gutter line, followed by a breathable membrane across the whole roof and new treated battens set out for the tiles. By quarter past eleven the roof was fully felted and battened, and the team had earned a half hour break.

Tiles back on, solar refitted, done by half two

The cleaned original tiles went back on, finished with a new dry ridge and dry verge system that needs no mortar and holds up far better in the wind. The solar panels were refitted and the roof given a final clean down. The job was complete by half past two, building control came out the next day, and the certificate went to the customer. A leak-free roof, built to last, finished in one day.
