Bury St Edmunds is one of the better preserved market towns in the east of England, and the reason is worth knowing if you own property here. The grid of streets between the Abbey and the Buttermarket was laid out by Abbot Baldwin in the eleventh century, which makes it one of the earliest planned towns in the country, and a great many of the buildings on it are older than they look. Georgian frontages were added to medieval timber frames on a large scale, so a tidy eighteenth century face very often has a fifteenth century roof structure sitting behind it.

Much of the centre, around Angel Hill, Churchgate and the Abbey Gardens, is listed or sits within the conservation area, so what you are allowed to do is not always what is cheapest. Matching existing materials matters, and it is worth establishing what is permitted before anything is stripped rather than halfway through. We are used to that conversation. Further out towards Thurston, Great Barton and Rougham the stock is more mixed and the rules are lighter, but the same principle applies: we will tell you what the roof actually needs.
