Bury St Edmunds is one of the better preserved market towns in the east of England, and the reason is worth knowing if you own property here. The grid of streets between the Abbey and the Buttermarket was laid out by Abbot Baldwin in the eleventh century, which makes it one of the earliest planned towns in the country, and a great many of the buildings on it are older than they look. Georgian frontages were added to medieval timber frames on a large scale, so a tidy eighteenth century face very often has a fifteenth century roof structure sitting behind it.
How far we travel
Being straight about it: Bury St Edmunds is not on our doorstep. We work from Dersingham on the West Norfolk coast, and Bury sits in the IP postcodes, which our coverage treats as the outer edge rather than the heartland. What we usually find here
The town is sheltered and inland, so this is rarely storm damage work. It is age. Clay plain tile and pantile over soft red brick, lime mortar that has finally given up on ridges and hips, parapet and valley gutters on the Georgian frontages that were awkward from the day they were built, and lead that has been patched with mastic at some point by somebody in a hurry. Where a Georgian front has been grafted onto an older frame, the junction between the two is very often where water gets in, and it is not always obvious from the ground.
Listed buildings and the conservation area
Much of the centre, around Angel Hill, Churchgate and the Abbey Gardens, is listed or sits within the conservation area, so what you are allowed to do is not always what is cheapest. Matching existing materials matters, and it is worth establishing what is permitted before anything is stripped rather than halfway through. We are used to that conversation. Further out towards Thurston, Great Barton and Rougham the stock is more mixed and the rules are lighter, but the same principle applies: we will tell you what the roof actually needs. Fast and efficient service, this must have been a one off? from quote to completion, including scaffolding 3 days. Inspection and quote on Wednesday, scaffold arrived Thursday and job started and finished on Friday. This was for new roof membrane, new battens cleaned and replaced tiles, as well as a complete new flat roof rubber covering and lagged loft as well for good measure. Left early Friday evening and apart from the skip of rubbish I would not have know they had been, all clean and tidy as promised. A big thank you to James and his crew for an excellent job.

We were very pleased with the work carried out by Prestige Roof Limited on our property In March 2026. They removed the old spray foam roof insulation, repairing timbers that had been damaged by it, retiling where needed and replacing the roof membrane and ridge tiles. They carried out this work in the time frame that they said they would.
