Ely is one of the smallest cities in England and one of the most recognisable, because the cathedral sits on the only real high ground for miles and can be seen from halfway across the Fens. That is not just a nice view, it tells you something about the weather here. The Isle of Ely was an island before the Fens were drained, and the flat drained land around it gives the wind an uninterrupted run at everything standing on it.
How far we travel
We should be straight about this. We are based at Dersingham on the West Norfolk coast, and Ely is a fair run south for us down the A10 through King's Lynn. It sits in the CB postcodes, which we treat as the outer edge of our patch rather than our heartland. We do work there and we are glad to come and look, but we would rather say at the start that we are travelling to you than have you find out while you are waiting on a date. For something small and urgent, a firm in Ely or Cambridge may well serve you better, and we will tell you so.
What Fenland does to a roof
Two things make roofs here behave differently to the ones we look after on the coast. The first is exposure. There are no hills and few trees to break the wind across the Fens, so gable ends, ridges and verges take a steady beating from every direction rather than one prevailing one. The second is the ground. Fen peat shrinks as it dries, and buildings on it move more than most, which is why so many older Ely properties have cracked haunching, opened-up ridge mortar and chimney stacks that have gone slightly out of true. That movement is often mistaken for a roof fault when it is really the ground below, and knowing the difference decides whether you need a repair or something more serious.
The buildings themselves
Around the cathedral and up towards the Gallery and the riverside at Babylon there is a good deal of listed and conservation area property: gault brick, clay pantile, some slate, and timber frames hiding behind Georgian fronts. Out towards Littleport, Soham and the newer estates it is mostly concrete tile on post-war and modern housing, which is a completely different job. Luke came out and inspected roof on the Thursday morning , by the afternoon we’d received a detailed report and quotation. By Tuesday we had scaffolding put up and by Wednesday evening we had a Complete new roof and all damage repaired.
