• Frost Damage: Moss acts like a sponge. It soaks up rainwater and holds it against the surface of the tile. When the temperature drops below freezing, that water expands. This can cause the tiles to crack, flake (spalling), and eventually fail.

• Blocked Gutters: As moss grows, clumps of it break off and roll down into your guttering. This causes blockages, overflowing water, and potential damp issues on your walls.

• Tile Displacement: Thick moss can grow between the gaps in tiles, lifting them up and allowing driving rain to get underneath.

The Right Way to Clean a Roof

There is a right way and a wrong way to clean a roof. You might have seen companies offering to "jet wash" your roof. As third-generation roofers, we strongly advise against this. High-pressure water can strip the protective granular coating off your tiles, damage the mortar bedding, and even flood your loft.

We use the Manual Scrape and Biocide method. It is safer, gentler, and more effective in the long run.

1. Manual Removal: We use specialist scraping tools profiled to the exact shape of your tiles. We manually remove the bulk of the moss and debris without using high pressure or harsh abrasives.

2. Gutter Clearance: Once the roof is scraped, we empty and clean your gutters to ensure all the falling moss is removed and your rainwater system is flowing freely.

3. Biocide Treatment: This is the magic step. We apply a professional-grade biocide treatment to the roof. This kills any remaining moss spores, lichen, and algae deep within the pores of the tile.

Long-Lasting Results

The beauty of the biocide treatment is that it keeps working after we have left. Over the following weeks and months, the natural weather cycle will wash away the dead organic matter, revealing the original colour of your tiles.

More importantly, the treatment creates a hostile environment for new moss. It prevents regrowth for years, meaning your roof stays cleaner for much longer than if it had just been pressure washed.
