Spring Into Action: Your Post-Winter Roof Checklist from Prestige Roof

Spring is here, the clocks have gone forward and the Easter weekend is just around the corner. Before you crack open the chocolate eggs, it is worth giving your roof a quick health check after the winter months. Here is our simple post-winter checklist to help you spot problems early.

Spring is Here, and So is Roof Inspection Season

Happy Easter from everyone at Prestige Roof! The clocks have gone forward, the daffodils are out across Norfolk and Suffolk, and our bright pink vans are once again a familiar sight on the roads of the East of England. Spring has well and truly arrived.

But while most people are busy planning Easter egg hunts and booking bank holiday barbecues, we have a slightly different tradition here at our Dersingham office. For us, spring means one thing above all else: roof inspection season.

Winter can be brutal on roofs across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and the wider East of England. Months of rain, frost, wind and the occasional bit of snow put your roof through its paces. The good news? Now that the worst of the weather has passed, spring is the perfect time to check how your roof has coped and catch small problems before they turn into expensive ones.

Why Spring is the Best Time to Check Your Roof

Think of it like this. You would not drive your car for six months of harsh conditions without giving it a once-over. Your roof deserves the same attention. The difference is that most people see their car every day but rarely look up at their roof.

Here is why spring is ideal for a roof check:

  • Winter damage becomes visible. Frost can crack tiles, high winds can shift slates and heavy rain can expose weaknesses in flashing and mortar. These issues often go unnoticed during winter because, understandably, nobody wants to climb a ladder in January.
  • Moss and algae thrive in the damp. The wet autumn and winter months create the perfect environment for moss growth, which traps moisture against your tiles and can cause long-term deterioration.
  • Gutters are likely clogged. Months of fallen leaves, twigs and debris can block gutters and downpipes, causing water to overflow and run down your walls. That is a direct route to damp problems.
  • Longer days make it easier to spot issues. With more daylight hours and drier weather, you can get a proper look at your roof from the ground or arrange a professional survey without battling the elements.

Your Post-Winter Roof Checklist

You do not need to be a roofer to give your home a basic health check this Easter. Here is a simple checklist you can work through from the safety of the ground. Grab a pair of binoculars and a cup of tea, and have a look.

Tiles and slates. Walk around your property and look up at the roof from different angles. Can you see any tiles or slates that have slipped out of position, cracked or gone missing entirely? Even one missing tile leaves your roof exposed to water ingress.

Ridge tiles. These are the tiles that run along the very top of your roof. Check whether any look like they are lifting or have gaps where the mortar has crumbled away. Loose ridge tiles are one of the most common issues we see after winter storms.

Gutters and downpipes. During the next heavy rainfall, take a look at how your gutters are performing. Is water flowing freely into the downpipes, or is it overflowing at the joints? Sagging gutters or green staining on the walls below are telltale signs of a blockage.

Chimney stack. Look at the brickwork and pointing on your chimney. Is the mortar crumbling or missing between the bricks? Also check the flashing, the lead strips where the chimney meets the roof surface. Damaged flashing is a very common source of leaks.

Fascias and soffits. These are the boards that run along the edge of your roofline. Are they peeling, cracked or showing signs of rot? Damaged fascias can allow water and pests into your roof space.

Flat roofs. If you have a flat roof on a garage or extension, check for any obvious pooling of water, cracks or blistering on the surface. Older felt roofs are especially prone to winter damage. Modern EPDM rubber and GRP fibreglass systems are far more resilient, but they still benefit from a visual check.

The loft. Pop your head up into the loft during daylight. Can you see any light coming through the roof where it should not be? Are there damp patches on the timbers or insulation? A quick look from inside can reveal problems that are invisible from outside.

Do Not Forget Your Gutters This Spring

We cannot stress this one enough. Blocked gutters are the number one cause of avoidable water damage to homes across the East of England. After a full autumn and winter of leaves, moss and debris building up, your gutters are almost certainly due a clean.

Our Fascias, Soffits and Gutters service includes a thorough gutter clean and inspection. If your guttering is old, cracked or beyond repair, we can replace it with modern, low-maintenance uPVC systems that will last for years.

Moss: The Silent Roof Killer

Spring is also the time when moss really starts to take hold. That green, fuzzy growth on your tiles might look harmless, but it is quietly causing damage. Moss holds moisture against your roof covering, which over time can cause tiles to crack, delaminate and deteriorate. It can also block the channels between tiles that are designed to let rainwater flow off the roof.

Our Roof Cleaning and Moss Removal service safely removes moss and algae, improving both the look and lifespan of your roof. It is one of the most cost-effective things you can do to protect your home.

When to Call in the Professionals

If your ground-level check reveals anything that concerns you, or if your roof is more than 20 years old and has not been professionally inspected recently, it is worth getting a proper survey. Our team can assess the condition of your entire roof, identify hidden problems and give you an honest recommendation on whether you need a repair, a clean, or something more substantial.

We carry out Roof Repairs across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and the wider East of England. As a family-run business based in Dersingham, led by Luke, a third-generation roofer, we take pride in giving straightforward advice without the hard sell. If your roof just needs a small repair, we will tell you. If it needs replacing, we will explain why and give you a clear, written quote.

Thinking About Selling This Year?

Spring is traditionally the busiest time of year for the property market. If you are thinking of putting your home on the market, the condition of your roof is one of the first things a surveyor will check. Visible damage, moss growth or a tired-looking roofline can raise red flags and even reduce your property's value.

And if you have spray foam insulation in your loft, be aware that most mortgage lenders will not lend against it. Our Spray Foam Removal service can resolve this issue quickly and professionally, giving you a completion certificate that satisfies surveyors and lenders.

Happy Easter from the Prestige Roof Team

We hope you enjoy the bank holiday weekend, however you are spending it. Whether it is an Easter egg hunt in the garden, a walk along the Norfolk coast, or simply a well-earned rest, we wish you and your family a wonderful Easter.
